Hello! My name is Autumn and I’m a travel enthusiast and lover of all things vintage.
Have you ever wanted to adventure around the world? How about travel back in time? If you said “yes” to either of those, then that makes two of us.
My origin story is simple:
I’ve been antiquing for as long as I can remember. My parents dragged me to many flea markets, thrift stores, and antique malls growing up and, to no one’s surprise, I emerged as a collector fascinated with history. Though I have many collections I’ve accumulated over the years, my most notable would be my postcards.
These postcards depict gorgeous mountains and waterfalls, flashy downtown streets, quirky motels, and kitschy tourist attractions (among other things), all in bright, cheery colors. I love them so much because the images printed on these cards allow the beholder a glimpse into the past.
So what does this have to do with adventuring, you may ask? Along with my love for old things, I am extremely passionate about traveling. The hard part about traveling, however, is having time (and resources) to go out and actually adventure. I find that, while I can and do spontaneously go out exploring, I really like having a destination point. So I was staring at some of my postcards one day and it hit me- why not merge the two? After all, these postcards depict images that would make perfect destination points and give me the kick in the pants I needed to get out. So I set out on a hike one day, postcard in tow, and took my first photograph.
I found that, by photographing my postcards, you’re able to see “back in the day”, all while merging the past and the present. It’s incredible to stand at the same location, see the same sights as depicted on the card, and witness (usually with sadness) how they have evolved over the years. But the thing that makes the experience even more amazing is to read the notes on the back and see the author’s opinion of the same location years ago.
Holding these letters, seeing the dates, and reading the words is humbling. It reminds me that we’re all human. We have one life. These people went out and spent at least a portion of it traveling and here I am, holding the momentos of these peoples’ trips 70+ years later. I decided to take my own trips, make my own memories, and share my journey of my travels and I hoped you would join! So buckle up and join me on my Adventures with a Postcard!
